flashback friday, music edition

So we all know I’ve fallen victim to the trendy dubstep as of late, I’m not proud to admit it, but if admitting to it is the first step then I’m well on my way to recovery.

For Halloween I attempted to be a very work-appropriate “punk rock chick” which in retrospect really wasn’t that far from the truth or what I look like normally… and apparently if you’re mexican and throw on a bandana in an attempt to be cute and have a cute head scarf, you’re automatically a chola. My plan backfired. But I’m getting off topic.

To get into the spirit of my “costume” I drove to work blasting the music I have been neglecting since I got my new car really. On the way to work I was blasting The Unseen’s State of Discontent and when I got out of work it was all about Whiskey Rebels. I had seriously forgotten how much I loved my punk rock. Halloween ignited a new love for all things rock related and since then I’ve been listening to my favorite albums which range from seriously heavy grindcore to metal to fun punk rock. I figured I’d share a few of my favorites with you for a nice little flashback friday of the harder side of my musical preferences.

I tried to organize these by easiest listening to most difficult (for some, but I love grindcore)

Whiskey Rebels – “Sacto United”

The Unseen – “Force Fed”

Norma Jean – “Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste” [seriously no flashback would be complete without norma jean lol]

At the Gates – “Slaughter of the Soul”

Darkest Hour – “With a Thousand Words to Say but One” [DH is one of my all time favorite bands, it was seriously hard to pick just one song to share with you]

Zao – “Race of Standing Still” [this is the band that really started it all for me, and this is probably my favorite song ever from them]

All Shall Perish – “Laid to Rest”

Cephalic Carnage -“Hybrid”

Leng Tch’e – “Motogrinding”

The beauty of these songs is that many of these I’ve listened to while gallivanting around Sacramento when I was 18 or 19 taking pictures all over. I was that girl in dickies, chucks, my little green wannabe army jacket, and a scarf on my head. I love these songs, reminds me of the days when I was into activism and politics more. It also reminds me that I need to get out and see live music more often. I used to go to shows at least once a weekend and now I’m lucky if I see a band once a YEAR. Its weird how priorities change with time.
